Justice & Safety

Lead: Stand for Children

Partners: Just City, Memphis for All Education Fund, MICAH, Official BLM Memphis

This focus area will examine critical policies necessary for all residents to feel safe and have a voice in their city. The Justice and Safety group will consider issues of equity and effectiveness in criminal justice, and devise policies to dismantle the systemic inequities that endanger people of color, while growing and connecting supports for individuals and families that are negatively impacted by oppressive structures (e.g., the school to prison pipeline). This area will also consider power building and power shifting for policy impact, including changing who has a “voice” in the community and how residents are heard. In particular, this group will explore strategies to support voter rights and civic participation in local democracy, as well as the needs of foreign-born and immigrant communities to know and exercise their rights.
